Understanding your rising sign in astrology

Your rising sign colours your whole chart. Here's what it reveals and why your birth time is essential to calculate it.

What is the rising sign?

The rising sign is the sign that was climbing over the eastern horizon at the precise moment of your birth. Where the Sun describes your deep identity, the rising sign describes your outward manner: the first impression you give, your way of approaching the world.

It colours the whole chart and explains why two people of the same Sun sign can seem so different.

Why your birth time is essential

The rising sign changes roughly every two hours. Without your exact birth time — and your birthplace — it's impossible to calculate it honestly. That's why, on Féedima, our engine never fabricates an approximate rising sign: it clearly tells you when the data is missing.

If you don't know your time, your full birth certificate (available from the town hall) usually mentions it.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a chart without the birth time?

Yes, but partial: Sun sign, the Moon's approximate position and numerology remain accessible. The rising sign and the houses require the exact time.
